Longtime Dundalk resident Penelope (Penny) Jackson died on May 13, 2013, at Gilchrist Hospice Center from pancreatic cancer. The Township Road resident was 70.
Born in Clarksburg, WV, Penny moved to Dundalk in 1952 with her family where her mother, Gretel Simmons, was a teacher at Dundalk Elementary School. She was in the first graduating class from the then-new Dundalk High School in 1960 and was a life member of the DHS Alumni Association. After high school she attended Stetson University where she earned a bachelors degree in education followed by masters degree courses at Towson University.
Following college Penny lived and taught school in South Daytona, FL, and in New Jersey before returning to Dundalk in 1986. As a teacher with the Baltimore County School System, she taught in various schools in the Southeast District including Oliver Beach Elementary, and Orems Elementary where she retired in 1997. Following her retirement she worked as a substitute teacher at Martin Boulevard Elementary for two years.
Penny was an avid gardener and delighted in working in her gardens at home. She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, family vacations to Emerald Isle, NC, and trips to West Virginia with her husband, Bob. She was a communicant at St. George’s & St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Dundalk where she served six years as Sunday School Superintendent and eight years as Treasurer.
In addition to her husband of 22 years, Robert, she is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Teresa & Jerrold Grable of Emmitsburg, MD, son Scott Jacobs of Daytona Beach, FL, sister Gretchen Fisher of Cockeysville, MD, sister Edris Christello and her husband Giro of Chase, MD, three nieces, one nephew, three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. George’s & St. Matthew’s Church on Saturday, May 18, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Garden Fund at St. George’s & St. Matthew’s Church, 2900 Dunleer Rd., Dundalk, MD, 21222, or to a charity of your choice.
