On February 13, 2016, Anna Cecilia La Paglia (nee Evans) of Dundalk, MD, loving wife of the late Joseph John La Paglia, and loving mother of five daughters passed away at her daughter’s home surrounded by her loving family.
Fondly known as “Miss Ceal” or Nana, she was a 1948 graduate of the Catholic High School of Baltimore, Maryland and started her career as a transcriptionist for the Federal Government in Washington DC. After meeting and marrying the love of her life, Joseph John she started working as a transcriptionist for the Pathology Department at Saint Joseph Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. “Miss Ceal” and Mr. Joe recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in November 2015. “Miss Ceal” continued her transcription career when she joined the Orthopedic Group; Reichmister, Becker, Smulyan and Keehn in Baltimore, where she transcribed for 25 years. She then went on to transcribe for Advanced Radiology where she retired at age 80.
“Miss Ceal” was an active member of the Ateaze Senior Center in Dundalk where she enjoyed and fondly participated in the water aerobics program held at CCBC-Dundalk. She also was an active member of the Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Dundalk where she served on the Liturgy Committee and laundered the alter linens for over 25 years. “Miss Ceal” also participated with her late husband Mr. Joe in the Eastfield Stanbrook Recreational Council by running the concession stands, organizing and cooking for the annual spaghetti dinner for the Eastfield Standbrook girls Flag Football team. She helped organize the fund raising Pancake Jamboree featuring the “Grange Grannies” held at the Dundalk Heritage Park. She also enjoyed cooking and sewing and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by her five daughters; Kathy Bender and her husband Mike, Linda Schatz and her husband Stephen, Deborah Heaps and her husband Michael, Lisa Scowden and her husband Walter and Susan Costa and her boyfriend Robert F. Hoofnagle Jr., MD. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Jennifer Reid and her husband Eddie, Kristy Koenig and her husband William, Mike Bender, Jr. and his wife Sara, Steven Kalinski and his girlfriend Lisa Girardi, Ryan Bender and his wife Stephanie, Matthew Gracey and his girlfriend Elizabeth Price, Lauren Czawlytko and her husband Steven, Walter Scowden III and his financée Blair Schammel, Daniel Costa and his girlfriend Kate Woods, Adam Scowden and his girlfriend Sarah Chetelat, Amy Costa and her boyfriend George Denton, Gregory Scowden and his girlfriend Leanna Jewell. Mrs. La Paglia had nine great grandchildren, Ethan and Liam Bender, Henry, Edison and Raymund Reid, William Koenig IV, Mason and Madison Czawlytko and Colton Bender. Mrs. La Paglia is also survived by her sister Mary Loretto Kurtz and her husband Donald and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends at the family owned and operated CONNELLY FUNERAL HOME OF DUNDALK, 7110 Sollers Point Road, on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM.
