James - Buckley

Mr. James (Jim) Buckley passed away on July 1 after sustaining injuries from a fall. He was 88 years old. Jim was a gentleman of quiet demeanor. He was a devout Christian who served God in many ways, including helping with the construction of a church in Catonsville Maryland many years ago. He served as a church worship leader and he superintended over a Sunday School program. Jim was musically inclined and played the trombone, keyboard, harmonica and numerous other instruments. Even without an instrument in his hands, he could make sounds as if he did, appearing to push the buttons on a trumpet. He was the lead trombone player for the Baltimore Colts marching band during the 60’s. As a young man, he developed a great fondness for the music of the 1940's. He loved to dance to the sounds of Swing, Big Band and Jazz. In later years, he would enthusiastically sing along with this music on the radio, while imitating playing the trombone. Jim was also an artist and he took pride in his paintings, metalwork and other creative endeavors. He was a skilled Heliarc welder and as many benefactors could attest, he was a jack of all trades. He worked as a model maker for Hydronautics, Inc. in Clarksville, where he helped in the testing of submarines. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Jim enjoyed bowling, often participating in league play. He also enjoyed spending time with his 2 daughters and their families. He endeared himself to his 2 sons-in-law, willingly lending an expert hand on their home projects. Jim possessed a strong entrepreneurial desire, something he inherited from his mother who owned and operated a candy store where he grew up in New Jersey. This inspired him to help his daughter Janice when she opened a flower and gift shop in Bowie Maryland. Together, they renovated a house in an antique district and Jim created the outdoor signage for the store. Jim served in the Navy during WW II and was often called upon to drive for senior level military leaders. He loved reminiscing about the VIP's he met, and he was especially proud to have once driven Captain Cromwell. Along with his immediate family including Joyce, his wife of 33 years, Jim will be greatly missed. The absence of his smile, sense of humor and warm personality will leave a void in the lives of those who knew him. Jim is survived by his loving wife Joyce, daughter Janice Shirlen (Jerry), daughter Deborah Kerfoot (Thomas), grandchildren Thomas Kerfoot (DiNetta), Kelly Murillo (Fabian), Joshua Shirlen (Lauren), and ten great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at Gardens of Faith Cemetery on Wednesday, July 6, 2016 for those who wish to attend.
