Longtime Maryland Volunteer Passes
Cecil C. Boblitz, 95, passed away on April 27, 2022. Mr. Boblitz was born in Baltimore on September 9, 1926. He was raised in the Evergreen neighborhood and attended the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute.
During WWII, he served in the US Navy Seabees during the Battle of Okinawa. In 1950, he and his wife, Margaret and son William moved to Dundalk. He worked at Bethlehem Steel Sparrows Point retiring after 35 years.
Following retirement, he began refurbishing local historical roadside markers. This grew into volunteer work at a state highway facility in Hanover where markers were brought in from all over Maryland, refurbished and at times moved to better locations.
In 1998, he was recognized by the State Highway Administration with an Excellence Recognition Award for 100 hours and work on 50 markers.
In 2002, he was presented the Preservation Service Award by the Maryland Historical Trust for his contributions on the Maryland Roadside Historical Marker Project.
In addition to his many years of volunteer service with the Historical Marker Project, he was a volunteer at the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine.
Mr. Boblitz was married to his late wife Margaret for over 50 years and had three sons, Mark Boblitz, and the late William Boblitz and Patrick Boblitz. He is survived by his two sisters La Rue and Ruth.
Family will receive visitors on Thursday, May 5th, from 5-8 PM at the Connelly Funeral Home of Dundalk, 7110 Sollers Point Road. A graveside service will be held on Friday, May 6th, at 10 AM at New Cathedral Cemetery, 4300 Old Frederick Road, Baltimore, MD 21229.
