Helen was born June 23, 1921 in Lasker, NC to Alice H. Hooper Cooke and Lokie C. Cooke. She worked at the Naval Ship Yard during WWII as a payroll clerk. Helen moved to Baltimore and continued to work at the Curtis Bay Naval Yard. On July 24,1944 she married Elwood T. Hartman. They raised eight children in the town of Sparrows Point, Maryland. Helen was a Baltimore Orioles fan, whom she celebrated her 100th birthday by a visit from Cal Ripken Jr. She loved to knit/crochet, playing bingo, crabbing/fishing, bowling, music, gardening and traveling with her family.
Helen is survived by her two sons Jerry, his wife Renee, Richard, his wife Elizabeth. Three daughters, Alice Hafner, Charlotte Weber and Carol Kraemer and husband John. Helen was the proud Grandmother of sixteen Grandchildren: Billy, Thomas, Megan, Daniel, John, Michael, Michelle, Crystal, James, Mark, Angie, Jason, Holly, Bobby, Robert and Carrie. She has twenty-six great-grandchildren. Helen is also survived by brother-in-law Richard J. Hartman/wife Cheryl, and many nieces and nephews she loved dearly.
Helen is predeceased by Elwood T. Hartman and three sons, Bobby, Michael and Donald. Also, her brothers, Wilmer Cooke and Robert Cooke, sister Ruby as well as sister-in-laws Charlotte and Sister Mary Colette Hartman.
Viewing will be held at Connelly's Funeral Home of Dundalk, 7110 Sollers Point Road, Dundalk Maryland 21222 on Monday, December 6th from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM. Funeral Mass will be held December 7th, at St. Rita’s Catholic Church, 3 Dunmanway, Dundalk, Maryland at 11:00 AM. Interment to follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
