On June 10, 2018, Leon Gilbert "Mac" McKemy, at age 87, passed away peacefully surrounded by loving family. Predeceased by his wife Joan B. McKemy (2013), and survived by four children: Lavinia M. Halloran, Susan G. McKemy (Geoff Rabe), Michael L. McKemy (Becky), Scott McKemy (Angie), daughter-in-law Pam McKemy and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and “adopted” children. Leon was also predeceased by his father Ira C. McKemy (1971), his mother Lula Hart McKemy (1979), 2 sons Jesse N. McKemy (1992) and Charles Steven McKemy (2011), and two siblings: Bernice M. Blackwell, Richard A. McKemy Leon McKemy “Mac” was truly one of a kind. They broke the mold when they made him - truth be told, the world couldn’t have handled more than of one of him! Leon always lived life a bit “on the edge”, never one to be bound by rules, but rather to see how far they could be stretched. Born on November 25, 1930, he was raised in Rockbridge County, VA. Growing up he worked on the family farm and played sports. After graduating from Lexington High School in 1950 he moved to the Baltimore area in search of job opportunities and never left. He worked at Bethlehem Steel for 22 years, with a break while serving in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne from 1956 - 1958. Ever the entrepreneur, he owned and operated gas stations and founded M&M Fuel in 1958. Leon “Mac” was a hard task master and also enjoyed a good card game or party had a memory like a steel trap and if he was willing to argue a topic, you could guarantee he knew his facts loved studying and talking about family history and genealogy was a Member of the church of his youth New Monmouth Presbyterian church in Lexington Virginia. was a licensed pilot, certified scuba diver and also enjoyed boating. was a founding member of the Millers Island Edgemere Business Association since 1985. continued to study new topics and technologies throughout his life was always analyzing situations and engineering solutions up through his last hospitalization. The family expresses deep gratitude to the staff of the Loch Raven VA Hospice facility for compassionate care at Leon’s life end.
