Paul A. Coberly

March 5, 1922 — March 3, 2024

Paul A. Coberly

Paul Coberly was born on March 5, 1922 in a home on Portship in Dundalk, MD to Art and Elva Coberly. He is predeceased by his sister, Edith (Clark) of Kennesaw, Georgia and a brother, Art Bernard of Portsmith, Virginia.

In 1940 he started working in the Rod Mill at Bethlehem Steel, Sparrows Point. He took a leave from there in 1943 to join the Merchant Marines to fight in WW II. He served as quartermaster.

Upon his honorary discharge, Paul returned home and in 1947 married his childhood sweetheart, Ruth Zimmerman in 1947. They lived in a small house in Dundalk for 4 years until they built their life-long home for their growing family. They had 4 daughters, Diane Marie (1949), Saundra Ruth (1950), Deborah Lynn (1955) and Sharon Ann (1962). The family regularly attended the Church of God that was originally in downtown Baltimore but later moved to the Overlea area.

Paul loved to stay busy and enjoyed owning several apartments in the Dundalk area. He retired from the Point in 1970 with 30 years of service. He immediately opened Paul's Tire Service on Holabird Avenue and retreaded tires and sold them and performed other work on cars.

Paul enjoyed making grandfather clocks and other wooden pieces that he gave to his family and friends. He enjoyed playing, collecting and repairing violins and after he closed the tire shop, traveled in his RV. He had a full life and enjoyed tinkering with tractors, 4 wheelers, motorcycles and just about any machine.

In 2015, Macular Degeneration took away his vision to the point that he could not drive, enjoy woodworking and so many other hobbies. He continued to live in the house he built in Dundalk with his three local daughters (Diane, Saundra, and Sharon) checking in on him frequently and bringing meals, groceries, etc.

In 2023 he was diagnosed with a mass in his colon that was cancerous. Even after surgery, it slowly metastasized throughout his body and in January 2024, after a minor fall at his home, it was decided that it was not safe for him to be alone any longer. He was admitted to a local long-term care facility until he peacefully passed on Sunday March 3, 2024. He lived all of his 102 years in his precious Dundalk.

He has left behind 4 daughters, 15 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 3 great great-grandchildren.
